The more I think about it, the more I want to do this one trip. It’s that golden goal, I think it’ll have to wait until next year though, but it looks like so much fun.
There’s a couple of provincial parks waaaay up north, I mean WAY up there, called the Kopka River and Wabakimi PP. It’s a huge lake and river system with some magical/absolutely terrifying portages, complimented by large lakes. Standard Prov. Park stuff.
The area isn’t anywhere particularly dangerous or even particularly more interesting than the usual places (Algonquin, Kawartha Highlands, Algonquin Highlands, French River, etc.). It does have the absolute best put-ins and take outs I’ve ever heard of.
Here’s what would make this trip the best: TRAIN in, FLY out! I’ll say that again. You take a Via Rail TRAIN into the park, which drops you off at the side of the tracks, and then you take a FLOAT PLANE out of the park!
That’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard of in my life.
I’d love to grab a train from Union Station in Toronto and go from there. Portage down Front Street and through Union, it’d be the best experience! Take the train for like, 24 hours up to the drop-off point (you have to say the exact mileage to Via). You’d be able to have a pint or two before portaging down to a lake. Paddle around for a few days, then look to the east! A plane coming down to pick you up! Strap all your gear either inside or out on the pontoon. Catch the train home.
It would just be that extra little bit of special to make it truly memorable, plus you’d be a million miles from everything.
